Word mimicking a dog's bark crossword clue

What’s This?

This clue is one of the four crosswords in this year’s Word of the Year puzzle. The others are “Eggsperience,” “Emoji” and “Selfie.” We’re only using the Word of the Year as the theme for today’s puzzle, which means we’re leaving the other three crosswords blank. It’s hard to find a phrase or name that perfectly captures the idea of a particular year, especially one that’s so recent. I think that means we’re getting close to a word that really captures this moment.

Since the puzzle’s just a bit of a tease, I’ll give you all some background about the Word of the Year crossword.

The Word of the Year crossword clues are selected by the Associated Press in a vote among their staff writers and editors. They are limited to 100 words or less. The puzzles are then sent to more than 100 clue writers and editors across the country who are asked to vote for their favorites. There are some obvious selections. New Year is pretty easy. Birthday might be nice, but it’s not always the first thing on your mind. Other times, you’ll be a bit shocked when a certain word shows up on the puzzle. For example, last year we had “Unicorn.” I don’t think I ever thought about a unicorn until that clue appeared.

Since we’re looking for the current year’s Word of the Year, what word might best represent this year? As I was putting together today’s puzzle, I thought of several possibilities. But none of them were quite right. The one that seems to be standing out the most, at least to me, is the dog’s bark. Dogs make noises. All kinds of noises. That’s what they’re called. And you know the bark. No, I’m not talking about the one from “The Incredible Hulk.” I’m talking about the short, sharp snort. That sound, when a dog barks, sounds almost like the phrase “What’s that?” It’s a very short, very quick sound that always lets you know what a dog is barking at.

The problem, of course, is that it’s not technically a word. It’s the name of a sound. But it sure gets the job done. It makes you understand what a dog is barking at in a very quick, very succinct way.

Anyway, there you have it. Word of the Year is the dog’s bark. And if you look at today’s puzzle, you’ll understand why.

You see, there’s a whole new crop of dogs in town. And they’re talking. Well, they’re talking, but they’re barking, too.

It sounds like “Duh.” But it isn’t the same. “Duh” just means, “I think you’re kidding.” It’s not talking. It’s just saying “duh.”

These new dogs, though, they’re talking. They’re talking about just about anything.

If you can put “Duh” to the left and “Duh” to the right, it spells DUH. It’s an anagram for HUH. That stands for dog, of course.

And I know it’s not a real word. But it’s almost a real word. And I can assure you it’s not a coincidence that the two most exciting news events of the year have involved dogs.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that, just like with humans, sometimes it’s good to have a dog. Or, at least, sometimes it’s good to have two dogs.

Sometimes it’s good to have a dog, even three, four, five dogs.

I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but the thing that got me started thinking about this subject, and the topic I hope to develop here, was watching some dogs run and play, and hear them bark and talk.

And that’s a very interesting thing. It seems pretty simple, just like everything else. You watch the dogs run, you watch the dogs play, and you hear the dogs talk. Then you ask yourself a question:

What’s the difference?

You’ll find that, like so much else in life, what’s true for dogs is true for us.

I could talk about the differences between dogs and us.

I could talk about the differences between men and women.

I could talk about the differences between the rich and the poor.

But I’d like to talk about the differences between dogs and us. And the thing is that, unlike the other differences, this is something that a lot of us already understand.

And the fact is that, for people who don’t have dogs, we’re kind of forced to come to this realization in a weird kind of way, in much the same way that we were forced to come to the realization that men and women are different.

That’s because, if we’re willing to look at the facts, it seems very obvious that dogs and people are very, very different.

They are different.

Let’s face it, when we go to visit a relative, we know we’re going to be treated like we’re the guests. And that’s because people want us to behave
